Year 2 - Science (wk4)

Hello Year 2,

This week in science we are going to be looking at food chains.

To stay alive all living things need to eat. Food gives living things energy, which they use to carry out other life processes, like moving and growing. Animals are not able to make their own food whereas green plants make their own food using sunlight, water and air.

Some animals get their food from eating plants. These animals are called herbivores.

Some animals get their food from eating other animals. These animals are called carnivores.

Some animals get their food from eating some plants and some other animals. These animals are called omnivores.

A food chain shows how each animal gets its food. Food chains show the ways that living things depend on each other to stay alive.

Each food chain normally starts with a green plant. Green plants are called producers because they produce their own food using energy from the sun.

All animals are called consumers because they consume their food by eating plants and other animals.

Animals that eat other animals are called predators. The animals that they eat are called prey.

These are some food chains. What is the producer in the food chain? What is the consumer in the photo? What is the predator? What is the prey?

Can you think of any more food chains? Have a go at drawing them like the ones above.

Enjoy,

Amy.
