Y6 Music Lesson - Week 3 - 04.05.20

WARM UP

Today you're going to start with some finger fitness!

It looks like it's going to be easy, but I found it quite hard.

Maybe my fingers are not fit enough!

Practise makes progression!

I hope you enjoy it.

Dave Brubeck is a composer. His Jazz quartet were very popular in the 1950's and 60's.

He liked to mix up classical music ideas with Jazz and African folk music.

His piece Unsquare Dance has an unusual pulse of 7.

Today we're going to be doing an activity on Unsquare Dance, but first we're going to practise counting in 7's.

We have already been practising counting in 7's with our 7's clapping game at school.

7's HAND CLAP GAME

Here is the clip to remind you, and teach you the parts that are tricky.

I think we did one of the parts a little differently.

You can tap it on the table or on your legs, like we did at school.

CHALLENGE - Do it in a round with someone else

PLAY THE GAME

Put on the backing beat of 7's. Try to clap the following, keeping in time.

COUNT and CLAP.

1. CLAP the 1st Beat - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 - x4

2. CLAP the 2nd Beat - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 - x4

2. CLAP 1 & 4 - x4

3. YOU CHOOSE which numbers to clap

LISTEN and JOIN IN

Count the 7 beats. What numbers are the claps on?

Join in with the clap.

ADD a STAMP

Stamp your foot on beats 1, 3 and 5

You can hear it played by the Double Bass.

CHALLENGE

Put them both together and perform the track.

Stamp - Clap - Stamp - Clap - Stamp - Clap - Clap

OUT of INTEREST

I thought you might like to see this dance performed to the track.
