Modern art is thought to be anything from about 1900 onwards and includes the Impressionist painters we looked at last time. In fact, the Impressionists are considered by many to be the first 'modern' movement. Make sure you look at the post on Impressionism before going any further.
In the last 100 years there have been more changes in art than in any other time of history. Different artists have tried out new techniques and have tried to be as different and as original as possible.
Contemporary art is anything that has been created fairly recently.
The events of the 20th Century changed the world forever. The bloodshed of 2 world wars forced people to rethink everything that was important them and new entertainments such as: photography, radio and television had arrived for good.

You won't like it all - but it is good to experience as much as you can and form an opinion.
It is even better if you can pull in some family members to see it as well and ask their opinion - I wonder if you will like and dislike the same styles as your family and friends?
I suggest that you make yourself a little art journal that you can note down the artists and creators that you come across and jot down some of your opinions. Find a notebook or make your own with some folded paper.
I will do several shorter posts so that you can experience some of the different styles but remember that you can also do some of your own research when you come across a style or a particular artist that you like.
